WELCOME TO ADMIRAL BUTTERFLIES
Admiral Butterflies really enjoyed the story of Wilfred and Marcel. We wanted to find out more about Moose, so we looked at the National Geographic website and found that Moose like to live in areas that have cold, snowy winters, such as Canada and Finland. We found a ‘fact file’ about Moose and decided to make a fact file all about ourselves. Moose are herbivores, but we like eating sausages and vegetables, so we know that we are omnivores. We weighed and measured ourselves using scales and metre sticks. We also made our own antler headbands so that we could pretend to be Marcel and knock apples from the tree!
Talking of trees, we have an apple tree in our school, so we decided to pick some apples to make apple crumble with. We had to peel and chop the apples and then make the crumble topping. Everyone was encouraged to kiss, lick and bite a small bit of crumble to develop our ability to try new foods.
Spring 1
In Admiral Butterflies, we have really enjoyed the start to the new year with a focus on the story Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. The children have been retelling the story using masks, animals, and visual prompts to support their communication skills and confidence in sharing what they know. We even wrote to the zoo to ask them to send us our favourite animal as part of our own Dear Zoo story — for some of us, the snake was not too scary and the giraffe was not too big after all!
We have also begun tuning into the sounds in our environment by wearing our “big listening ears” that we made ourselves. The children enjoyed identifying sounds at home and outdoors, as well as guessing different animals hidden in a box.
In maths, we have been exploring the concept of more and less, using concrete objects to help the children show and explain their understanding.
It has been a fantastic start to the term, full of excitement, learning, and creativity.
