Emperor Butterflies

WELCOME TO EMPEROR BUTTERFLIES

Autumn Term 1

The pupils in Emperor Butterflies have settled smoothly into school life. They have been busy exploring the classroom, outdoor area and sensory room; building friendships; working alongside their peers; engaging with their teachers and learning daily routines.

At the start of term, the pupils enjoyed the book This Moose Belongs to Me. They contributed to a whole-school display by creating moose artwork, using their handprints to form the face and antlers. The children also explored colour mixing with primary colours, experimenting with paint both on paper and with their hands.

As part of our harvest learning, the pupils picked apples from the school’s apple tree and used them to make apple crumble. They peeled and chopped the apples, assembled the crumble and of course enjoyed eating it – it was delicious!

Continuing our autumn theme, we read the story Owl Babies and created owl pictures by sponging white paint onto black paper before adding details to complete the owls.

Next, we read The Enormous Turnip and the pupils enjoyed sequencing the characters, creating a story map and acting out the story using the small world farm toys.

To conclude the first half term, we learned about Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The children made paper plate divas, dressed up in special clothes and enjoyed having mehndi patterns painted on their hands.

Autumn Term 2

We started the second half of the autumn term with learning based around the story Whatever Next by Jill Murphy. The children loved taking part in a pretend trip to the moon, including a classroom picnic just like the one in the story.

For Bonfire Night, the pupils explored mark-making with chalk on black paper to create some lovely firework pictures.

During Remembrance, we observed the two minutes’ silence. The pupils then used their mark-making and sticking skills to create poppy pictures.

Leading up to Christmas, our learning focused on traditional tales, beginning with The Three Little Pigs, followed by Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The term ended with a range of Christmas activities, including learning about the Christmas story and making Christmas cards and crafts. We finished with a Christmas party and a special visit from Father Christmas.
